If Bora Bora is too far, where do you set your sights? I pose this question as it makes me think of tropical climes with afternoons full of trade wind pleasantries, while in Vancouver we suffer through a wet September. However, the innuendo in this tease of a question is, how do we as individuals determine in a realistic way, our goals and when goal setting is applied to a mediation, how do you manage it in a subjective yet objective way? Ah, a lot of questions! Sequentially, I suppose the best way to consider this is to realize that goal setting is productive in a mediation or a negotiation. However, there are limits to the achievable, as reality intersects ambition and the objective. Limits are imposed by external situations. If you are on trial for a criminal offence, you cannot avoid the fact that the law, if applied by the court, may impose a conviction and a particular sentence on you notwithstanding any goal setting that you attend to. Without sounding like a wet blanket, ambition and goals have their limitations. This does not mean that one shouldn't have lofty ambitions. It is important to think in a grand manner. However, when in a negotiation, one should consider what is achievable and position oneself stategically to accomplish the most realistic goal. More about strategy in my next blog.
